The company stood by the notch, even though it got a lot of negative feedback. The "Dynamic Island" is a cutout that uses software to make the space more useful.

Dynamic Island is an area around the notch that shows useful information like currently playing song, a notification for a call, and how far from your house you are. If you want a better visual idea, watch the video below.

There is a pill-shaped cutout and a hole punch-shaped cutout on the phone. In all of the footage we've seen so far, Apple has hidden that gap. The screen on the phone allows it to turn off certain features.

The status bar has always been used to check battery levels or pull down the notification tray. The shape of the notch in iPhone models before the 14 Pro prevented app makers from drawing over the battery and network icons.

The top of the screen can now be utilized thanks to the new design and even the fact that there is an easy way to use it. We noted in our review that Dynamic Island could be used by apps that use CallKit. The Live Acitivies were announced at the Worldwide Developer Conference. Live Acititives is coming later this year to XCode and iOS 16 for developers. Third-party adoption of the new island could increase after that.

Review of Apple’s iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro: They’re leaning into it

Apple has yet to nail down the overall execution of the feature. You can enlarge Dynamic Island by touching the sides of the cutout. The cutout areas are not touch-sensitive, but Apple uses touch tricks to "generate" a touch based on the parts of your finger you land on. There may be a few hits and misses in real life.

A single touch will open the app without the need to expand the pill around the cutouts. You will need to long press on the pill to open the Widget. If you tap on the pill while listening to a song on Apple Music, the app will open and you won't have toggling between the tracks or adjusting the volume. Designers argue that it is not the best interface execution as it is difficult to reach with one hand. A lot of people just use phones with two hands.

Dynamic Island uses the screen real estate to the fullest. Extending the top bar is not a new idea. The V10 and V20 had a second screen on top of the regular screen. It wasn't a success. Some version of Dynamic Island could be pushed by Apple. People on the social networking site are creating concepts for various skins.

Many attempts have been made to hide the cutouts in the phone design. There are a lot of pop up cameras from different companies. They didn't stick around and the manufacturers did.

Apple asked developers to build on the cutouts, which was a bold choice for a marquee feature. It isn't likely to be a game- changing feature. It is indicative of the fact that we might be a few years away from in-screen selfies on mass market phones.
