PeteCarroll stayed on brand leading up to Monday night's season opener, delivering his usual treat-every-game-the- same message in his responses to frequent questions about facing Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos

Facing Wilson six months after their divorce made this more than just another win.

The old flames are back.

On his weekly radio show, he continued to say that the win wasn't valid. He said it was rewarding for the former Seahawks who were there. Marshawn Lynch, Richard Sherman, Doug Baldwin, K.J. Wright, and others were teammates with Wilson.

"I just wanted it, I didn't need the validation," he said. I didn't want to lose. The reasons that come along with this one made me want to win. It's possible that the guys that have played before represent everything. It meant a lot to those people. I was so happy to be able to hug them and look at them.

It meant a lot to them.

"You figure that out," he said. They really wanted it and I knew we were playing for more than just the regular stuff. We have a relationship with the past. They like the fact that they played here and they like seeing us do well. They realized there was a big opportunity and a big statement to be made after this night. It's about a group of people. This is the ultimate team sport and it has been said before. Everyone has to take it.

It rubs guys wrong sometimes when there is so much focus. I'm happy that we won. It was significant because it was the first game of the year. It couldn't be better because it was Monday. It was rewarding and we went.

The Seahawks' account trolled Wilson and the Broncos with a pair of jokes, but they weren't subtle.

The decision by the Broncos to attempt a game-winning field goal from 64 yards out in the final seconds of the game was a surprise to the coach. The Broncos missed a field goal that could have given them a one-point win.

"After all of the talk and all of the anticipation, and we didn't have a chance and all that, we were doubted the entire year, and we didn't have a chance at all," he said. We get to feel that they weren't correct.

The focus of the defense was to get Wilson to move to his left so that they could force him to throw across his body.

The way to play him is through it.

It's difficult for him when he moves to his left. We were able to do some things that weren't perfect, but it was effective and we felt like we were in control of it. It wasn't always easy to get the sack. To try to get him to go where we want him to go. The guys did a great job. We have the ability to do better.

Wilson, the best quarterback in franchise history and the only one to lead the Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory, was welcomed back to Lumen Field with a dozen or so hugs from former teammates and coaches. His only interaction with the other person was after the game.

"I don't know what my words were," he said. I think it was a nice game.
