The richest purse in the sport's history will be on the line at the season-ending team championship in October.
There will be a $16 million first place prize. Each team will beseeded one through twelve. The top four seeds won't have to face each other in the next round. The other eight will go through a series of tests.
The seeding will be decided. Immediately after players are drafted, the team captains will play a close-to-the-pin game.
The team championship format was released by a US District Court in California as part of its antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour.
"The Team Series Championship will be played over four days as a match-play head-to-head knock-out playoff, with the winning Team crowned as the'Team Series Champion'," the rules and regulations state. After the Player Draft preceding the Team Series Championship, each team will be ranked and seeding one through twelve (12), with each team captain having one shot to hit toward a target in a 'nearest the pin' style.
The first seed will be determined by the proximity to the target of each other Team Captain's shot.
The details of the team championship will be released in the future, according to a spokesman for LIV Golf.
It is unsurprising that they would pick something tacky and unoriginal to try and expand the game. It is what it is, that is what it is. It's not very interesting. XFL is what it is. And1 is on a tour. It's not a sport. There is a circus.
The document states that the fifth-seeded team will have the first choice in picking its opponent, with the second-seeded team followed by the third and fourth. The losing teams will be eliminated.
Individual match-play contests and pairs match-play contests will be part of the team matches. One point is the value of each match. The captains will pick two players to play in a sudden death playoff.
The four players on the second-place team will each get $10 million, the third and fourth will each get $8 million and the fourth will get $4 million. The teams that finish fifth through eighth will each get $2 million.
The golfer said it was not competitive. The guys who play on the PGA Tour and compete in major tournaments are not interested in this nonsense.
As many as 12 players will be granted exemptions to play in the team championship.
