On Tuesday, Amtrak suspended some of its most storied and picturesque routes in preparation for a rail worker strike that could damage the US economy.

Tuesday departures for the Southwest Chief, Empire Builder, California Zephyr, and a portion of the Texas Eagle routes have all been pre-emptively canceled.

The shorter state-supported routes could be canceled if the freight rail carriers don't reach a resolution with the unions.

Nearly all of the 21,000 miles of track in the Midwest and western US are owned, maintained, and controlled by freight railroads. A freight rail worker strike would affect passenger rail service.

Most travel within the Northeast Corridor between Boston, New York, and Washington is unaffected by a potential strike. A small number of Northeast Regional departures would be affected by a strike, but the higher-speed Acela line will run a full schedule.

If your trip is affected by these changes, you will be able to change your reservation to another date or get a full refunds.
