The US is launching a national trial to assess how effective tests designed to spot signs of multiple types of cancer in blood drawn from a patient's arm are. It should provide a standard approach to launching cancer screening studies as companies flood the field with new tests.

The rule is that most cancers can't be reliably screened for before symptoms begin. Most of the multi-cancer early detection tests look for tumors that explode after the immune system attacks them. The debris from dead tumors can be found in the bloodstream, which can be used to detect cancer. A biopsies follows if the finding is confirmed.

The National Cancer Institute is running a trial to see how effective various blood tests are at spotting cancer in 24,000 people over four years. A clinical trial will start if the findings are promising. The full story is available to read.
