Vietnam beckons in any season, but picking the optimum time for a visit depends on what you want from a trip most: optimum beach weather. Is there a cultural festival? There are fewer tourist crowds. There is a combination of all three.

High season: July & August

It's the best time of the year to visit the beach.

The busiest months to visit Vietnam are July and August with prices increasing by up to 50% by the coast. The country is hot and humid with spectacular summer monsoons.

Shoulder season: December-March

It's the best time of the year to visit Vietnam.

The winter months in Vietnam are usually cooler than the summer months. In the south, there are clear skies and sunshine.

If you like big cities, shoulder season is a good time to visit Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The whole country is moving and hotel prices are going up.

Low season: April-June and September-November

It's the best time to explore the entire country.

The transition period from winter to summer and summer to winter in Vietnam offers days of sunshine but also days of rain. It is a great time to visit if you want to avoid tourist crowds or if you want to tour the entire country.

It's a good time to visit Halong Bay, with the weather reliable in October and November.

January

There is snow in the far north in the winter. The weather is mild further south. The Dalat Flower Festival, held early in the month, is always a wonderful event with huge elaborate displays, music, fashion shows and wine festivals. The key events are the flower festival.

February 

Chinese winds mean grey, overcast conditions in the north. The south has sunny hot days. Tt, theVietnamese New Year, is celebrated in February. Transport is full and many businesses are closed. Sometimes Tt can fall in January. Tt is a key event.

March

Grey skies and cool temperatures can affect anywhere north of Hi An, but at the end of the month they start to warm up. The dry season is coming to an end. An annual coffee festival will take place in Bun Ma Thut during March. Local entertainment and growers rub shoulders in the main park. The coffee festival is a key event.

April

The winter rainy season should have ended by now and there are some great festivals on offer. You can observe the somber traditions of the Holiday of the Dead, where ancestors are honored and offerings are placed on graves and spiritual sights throughout the country, or you can enjoy a plethora of art, theatre, music, circus and dance performances. The key events are the festival.

May

There is a good chance of clear skies and warm days this time of year. It is a quiet month for tourism and the sea is warm. During Phng Sinh, which marks Buddha's Birth, Enlightenment and Death, there are lively street processions and lanterns being hung on pagodas. The Jade Emperor Pagoda is one of the complexes where lavish celebrations take place. There are key events.

June

Vietnam is a great place to visit just before the peak domestic season. Plan on spending some time by the coast at this time of year because of the heat. In June, the city is a hive of activity with a street festival, photography exhibitions, sports events, and kite-flying contests. The key events are the sea festival.

July

July marks the beginning of high season and with it comes higher prices for accommodations and more people in the area. The Danang International Fireworks Festival, which takes place in late June and early July, is one of the reasons to visit this month. The Danang International Fireworks Festival is a key event.

August

Domestic and international tourists visit during the peak months. It's a good idea to book flights and accommodations in advance. Beaches are busy with people. The weather is hot. The Children's (or Mid-Autumn) Festival, a big event in Hi An and Hanoi, when citizens celebrate, is one of the cultural festivals this month. The key events are Trung Nguyen and the children's festival.

September

Vietnam's second annual low season starts in September and is an excellent time to visit the entire nation. There are fewer people on the move at the coast. The temperatures and humidity fall. On September 2, there are big parades and events in Vietnam. In front of Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, there is a rally and fireworks, as well as boat races on Hoan Kiem lake. The end of the month is when Hanoi Pride arrives in town. Vietnam National Day is a key event.

October

It's a good time to visit the far north, with clear skies and mild temperatures that are good for hiking. The center is affected by winter winds and rain in the south. As part of the Mid-Autumn Festival, locals across the country eat moon cakes filled with lotus seeds, watermelon seeds, peanuts, and duck eggs. In September, the festival falls. There are key events.

November

It's a good time to visit HCMC, Mi N, the Mekong Delta and offshore islands as the weather is usually sunny. Cool and rainy can be found in the center and north of the country. There are many reasons to head south, one of which is the Khmer Ok Om Bok Festival, which takes place in the south of the country. In October, the festival falls. The festival features key events.

December

The popular tourist resorts get busy in the middle of December. It's a good idea to book a room well in advance of Christmas. The weather is warm in the south, but cold in the north. Christmas Day is celebrated in Vietnam by the catholic population. There are many people who attend midnight Mass in places like Pht Dim. L Ging sinh is a key event.
