You should fix that if you're not watching Abbott Elementary. Not only is it one of the best and most wholesome new comedies on TV, but every episode is worth it for the hilarious line readings by the author. The Television Academy agrees, as evidenced by the fact that she won an award on Monday night for her role in the comedy series.
She was nominated for a Tony Award in 1982 for originating the role of Deena Jones in the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls, as well as appearing on TV as far back as the 1970s. She's the first black woman since Jackée Harry in 1987 to win an award, and after recovering from her initial shock, she marked the occasion with a moving speech.
"I am an extinction species, but I sing no victim's song," she said. I am an artist and I know where my voice belongs.
She said that anyone who has ever had a dream and thought it would come true is wrong. This is what hard work looks like. Don't give up on yourself.
