According to Adam Schefter, the San Francisco 49ers running back is expected to be out for two months with a knee injury.
The full severity of Mitchell's injury was previously reported by Ian Rapoport, who said Mitchell was due to have an exam. He was expected to be out for a long time.
It's the second year in a row that the 49ers' starting running back has suffered a significant injury in the season opener, as last year's starter, Raheem Mostert, was lost for the season in the first week. Kyle Shanahan said Mitchell would be tested on Monday.
Mitchell has been injured in his young career. The second-year running back missed six games in his first year because of injuries. He was hurt in the preseason and missed the entire season.
Jeff Wilson Jr. ran for 22 yards on nine carries when Mitchell was out. Jordan Mason and Tyrion Davis-Price will be Wilson's backups until Mitchell comes back.
San Francisco's rushing attack is unique in that star receiver Deebo Samuel is a vital part of it, as he carried the ball eight times for 52 yards and a touchdown against the Bears. The quarterback led the team with 13 runs. While Mitchell is out, the 49ers should be able to manage their run game.
