A new lunar mineral has been found in samples from the moon in 2020.

The Chinese goddess of the moon, Chang'e, is also known as Changesite. The particles were being examined in China.

A single crystal of Changesite–(Y) was found by researchers at the Beijing Research Institute of Uranium Geology.

At the press conference, the finding was announced. It was confirmed as a new mineral by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification.

The United States and former Soviet Union were the first countries to discover a new lunar mineral.

The first lunar sample return mission since the 1970s took place in December of 2020.

The mission collected 3.81 lbs of lunar samples and delivered them to Earth to be studied.

The next moon mission is expected to be Chang'e 6. The first samples from the far side of the moon will be collected.
