Finebaum: There could be a lot of losses for Notre Dame this season (1:02)

The loss to Marshall was a big one for Notre Dame, according to Paul. There is a time and a place for this.

The quarterback for Notre Dame suffered a high-grade AC joint injury in the loss to Marshall.

The recovery process for Buchner's surgery will take four months and he will be out for the rest of the season.

We can probably put it somewhere in January. That is where we are at with that. Drew Pyne will be our starter moving forward, and as I said when we talked about the quarterback competition in fall camp, I had the utmost confidence in both of those guys being able to lead our offense and lead this football team.

In the first two games, he was 28 of 50 passing for 378 yards, no touchdown and two turnovers.

During his freshman year, Pyne played in four games. Steve Angeli will be on the second team.

With Pyne as the starter, he doesn't think the pass game will change a lot. The speed advantage will be the difference between the two. Pyne will have to decide what run plays the team can call with him as the starter because the ability to make a team respect the quarterback is important in the option game. The coaches need to do a better job of preparing the team after a loss like the one against Marshall.

The last 36 hours have been a reality check for all of us. To really figure out what our issues are, we need to do a deep evaluation of everything we're doing. I think I said after the game that it is execution, but I think more than that it is focusing on the entire game.

Despite losing the quarterback competition before the season, Pyne has remained ready and prepared to take over at any time.

Despite not being on the field, Pyne and Angeli will still have him on the sidelines.

You need to become a coach now, that's what Buchner's role will be. Even though you won't be playing, we need to make our team better.
