The user said on Facebook that the headset was left in the hotel room where he worked.
There was a label on the package that said it was not for resale. In the video, he removes the headset and controller. He posted photos of the device in the comments of a post on a Facebook Group.
The person who was in the hotel room reclaimed the device, he said. Meta did not reply immediately.
The updated version of the Meta Quest, which recently saw a $100 price increase, is called the Meta Quest Pro.
This isn't the first time a product from a big tech company has appeared. A prototype of Apple's new phone was left in a bar. In April, a prototype for thePixel watch was found in a restaurant, and photos of it were shared with the rest of the world.
Meta's new virtual reality headset is expected to be unveiled at the company's annual Connect event on October 11. The company has been teasing the project this year after the CEO made the announcement on Joe Rogan's show.
The new headset will allow people to keep eye contact and track their facial expressions, thanks to new sensors.
Meta is pushing heavily into the metaverse, a landscape that allows users to interact virtually. Mainstream adoption hasn't reached the concept.
