On Monday night, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss loudly stepped away from their planned Star Wars trilogy. Also yesterday, Jane Goldman's long-anticipated Game of Thrones prequel series starring Naomi Watts was canned after HBO said "nah" to the troubled pilot episode. Yesterday evening, however, the network announced it had picked up an entirely separate show straight to a ten-episode order. At this rate, we can reasonably expect both a dedicated Game of Thrones tab on HBO Go, along with 15 other canceled projects along the way.

This prequel series will be called House of the Dragon and will focus on the rise and fall of the Targaryen dynasty, around 300 years before the Game of Thrones story we all know and love kicks off. It's based on A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood, which documents Aegon the Conqueror's creation of the Iron Throne and the various dynamics of Westeros that have become firmly entrenched by the time the series we're familiar with begins.

This being a Targaryen story before their reign was ended, expect plenty of Thrones hallmarks to be center stage. Of course, I'm talking incest, which the noble house was doing long before Jaime and Cersei made it weird(er). I'm talking wildfire-drenched battle sequences. I am, most certainly, talking about DRAGONS, big ones, of which there will be more than three.

The show was created by Martin and Ryan Condal, co-creators of USA Network's Colony. The pair will apparently write all ten scripts for the first season, with Condal also directing several of the episodes. HBO has apparently decided no pilot is needed for this one: The chips are already down for a full season one. Start prepping those flowing platinum wigs, wardrobe department.
