Russian soldiers dropped their rifles and fled villages as locals after Ukrainians regained control of hundreds of square miles of territory in the Kharkiv region.
In a surprise counteroffensive, Ukrainian forces have regained control of the majority of the eastern region.
Much of the region had been occupied by Russian troops in the initial offensive that began in February.
The pace of the counter-attack caught the Russian soldiers off guard, according to locals in the village.
Olena Matvienko told The Post that half of them fled in their vehicles. She said that the people who were abandoned panicked and tried to flee.
Matvienko told The Post that the clothes were taken so the drones wouldn't see them. Our bikes were taken. They pointed guns at my ex- husband.
Matvienko told The Post that soldiers dropped rifles on the ground and left behind crates of ammunition as well as vehicles including a Russian tank that was loaded on a truck.
The commander of the counter-offensive in the southeastern corner of Kharkiv province told The Financial Times that Russian soldiers left in such a haste that meals were still being prepared.
"We were hoping for success but didn't expect such cowardice," he said. They abandoned their tanks and equipment.
The Russian army was degraded so much that they fled like sprinters.
The goal of the Ukrainian government is to take back all of its land taken by Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his Saturday night address that Ukrainian territory has been liberated by Ukrainian forces.
