According to Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal, New England quarterback Mac Jones had a back injury.

He was selected by the Pats with the 15th overall pick in the draft. In his first full year as Alabama's starter, he threw for over 5,000 yards and 41 touchdown passes. His passing efficiency rating was the highest it had ever been.

Jones was expected to be the backup to CamNewton, who signed with New England in the off-season.

The way for Jones to get the nod in Week 1 against the Dolphins was made possible by the release ofNewton. His performance in the preseason earned him more than he deserved.

ThePatriots' faith in Jones was further substantiated by his calm during the regular season.

In the opener, Jones went 21-of-30 for 213 yards, one touchdown and one pick, and his performance in the future will be a big factor in New England's chances of dethroning the Bills.
