Tony La Russa says he is recovering well from having a pacemaker inserted and is unsure when he will return to run the club.

La Russa was in Oakland to celebrate the retirement of Dave Stewart's jersey by the A's. La Russa was not in charge of his team.

After discussing his health with The Associated Press, the Hall of Famer shared details of his procedure. He said he is grateful to have had a heart problem.

La Russa wore jeans, sneakers, and a short-sleeve collared golf shirt while standing in the dugout. I flew to Arizona because I have had my physical there since the '90s. It's just a question of regaining strength after they fixed it.

La Russa didn't want to miss the special day for Stewart.

The 1989 earthquake World Series sweep of the San Francisco Giants was one of the highlights of La Russa's time with Oakland from 1986 to 1995.

La Russa isn't sure when he'll be in uniform again. During La Russa's absence, the bench coach has been leading the team. He was pulled away by the medical staff as he was about to take over the team.

I'm happy to meet him. Cairo said that he looked good. I know how he feels because I've talked to him and he's happy. I'm happy to have seen him. The entire team is happy to see him.

"I don't plan on being in uniform until the say it's time to put a uniform on.''

La Russa and Cairo speak twice a day, and La Russa watches every game from his house until he is cleared to do more. At spring training, he had an issue as well.

La Russa said that he had fixed his problem. I will be able to do a triathlon when it gets better.

Maybe he would consider training for a triathlon.

La Russa said there was no chance.
