Anthony Varvaro, a six-year major league baseball player and current New York City police officer, was killed in an automobile accident on the New Jersey toll road. The man was 37 years old.
On the day of his funeral, the Staten Island native will be remembered by his wife, four children, teammates and brethren.
Varvaro grew up in New York City and played baseball and football in high school. He was drafted by Seattle in the 12th round of the 2005 MLB draft after earning All-American honors at St. John's.

Varvaro stayed in the big leagues through the end of 2015, playing for the Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Socks. After having his second Tommy John surgery, he returned to the mound in 2016 after a long rehabilitation.
Varvaro didn't wait for another break after finishing in the minor leagues and instead found a new calling during the 2016 offseason. The opportunity to join another exclusive group was too great for the hurler to pass up. Varvaro wore a different uniform after 166 MLB appearances and over $2 million in salary earnings.
In 2016 Varvaro told the Torch that his career may have been coming to an end due to his body breaking down. The opportunity with the Port Authority Police Department came when I probably could have played a little longer.

He was an officer with the Port Authority. The president of the Little League was named in 2021.
The Port Authority issued a statement on his behalf.
Officer Varvaro will be remembered for his bravery and commitment to service.
