According to police officials and his former teams, Anthony Varvaro was killed in a car crash on his way to work at the Sept. 11 memorial ceremony in Manhattan. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey had a man named Varvaro. He played baseball at St. John's and went on to pitch in the majors for six years. The Braves expressed their sadness on the death of Anthony Varvaro. We are praying for his family and colleagues. He was en route to serve at the World Trade Center Command in commemoration of September 11, 2001 activities when he was involved in a motor vehicle accident. The baseball coach said he was at a loss for words over the death of Varvaro.
He was an assistant coach at St. John's when Varvaro was there and he said that he was everything he could want in a player. My heart goes out to his family.
The Port Authority expressed their sympathies.
