In the end I couldn't bring myself to do it. There are two big, nasty numbers that put me off, and no classic Apple "one more thing" to help me overcome them.

Plus, to X, to Pro

Before we get into those problematic numbers, we need to know some history. Up to and including the iPhone 8 Plus was the model I went for. A lot of the front of the screen was taken up by the large screen. The smaller screens on the "normal" iPhone were not as nice to use. I have been happily living with the smaller phone since the iPhone X solved the dilemma.

What's the reason? lugging the massive iPhone 8 Plus around had been a problem for me. The battery life hasn't been a problem for me. The iPhone 13 Pro is great if you don't use Apple or Maps for a long time, and it will last me for a full day. The Pro Max's bigger battery will last longer, but I didn't think the extra hours would make a difference.

I have watched a lot more video on my phone. The big, unfolded screen of theGalaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Fold 4 has made editing photos, and working more pleasant than on the iPhone 13 Pro. The size of the phone is not as important as it used to be. The phone was making a call.

About those numbers

The email from Apple that confirmed my pre-order was for the iPhone 14 Pro. I wanted to do it, but that something extra just isn't there to push me past two very unpleasant numbers that put me off. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is more than double the weight. It is a trade-off I am willing to make, since the Z Fold 4 is only 23 grams heavier, but has two screens, one of which is 7.6-inch. The $1,699 price is flexible as well.

The price is one of the numbers. If I wanted the Pro Max version of the phone, I would have to spend an additional $100 or more. Except I live in the U.K., where the price of the phone is high. If you add an extra 100 pounds to the price of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, you'll get it for less than the original price of the phone. A bigger screen and battery costs a lot of money.

I need that famous Apple at this point. I spent about the same amount on the iPhone 14 Pro Max as I did on the Z fold 4. I think the folding phone is worth it. The S22 Ultra is not just a bigger version of the S22 Pro.

That extra just isn't there. It was obvious that Apple knew what it was doing and that it wasn't worth differentiating the two completely, as it had done with the larger phone's camera. I think my pre-order basket would have contained an Apple product if this had continued. It was not possible to justify living with the extra costs and weight.

Could Dynamic Island save the day?

This is how I made my decision, and luckily my lifestyle still suits the smaller phone. Joe Maring did the opposite. I asked him why he upgraded from an iPad to an iPad Pro.

The benefits of going Pro Max are bigger screens and longer batteries. The 6.1-inch screen on the normal Pro model feels cramped when compared to the larger phones I review throughout the year. It is great that I can fit it in any pocket and use it with one hand, but it is limiting if I watch a video or follow a fitness program. It's obvious that the longer battery life is important. I want to limit my use of battery packs when I am out and about because I am doing more traveling than I was last year. I want to make sure I have enough battery for the 14 Pro.

I wanted to try the Pro Max this year, and it sounds like it's reasonable. He used the Dynamic Island feature as a reason to take the plunge.

The Dynamic Island pushed me over the edge. The larger screen on the Pro Max will allow the Dynamic Island to be larger and not have it take up a lot of the screen area below it.

That is a very good point. I don't know if the Pro Max's bigger screen will emphasize its strengths more or if the smaller screen will end up being too packed and busy when it's in action.

It's too late now. My name is going to be on the phone pro. Unless Apple sees a reason to make the heaviest, most expensive iPhone truly different again, perhaps using Dynamic Island for the next year will push me into the waiting arms of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but it's going to have to be a significantly better experience if it's going to
