The rule that allows assets to be passed from one person to another will allow King Charles to avoid inheritance tax on the Lancaster estate.

The monarchy's primary source of income was automatically passed on to Charles by his father, while the Duchy of Cornwall estate was passed on to William by his father.

The UK government introduced a rule in 1993 to protect the royal family's assets from being wiped out if two monarchs died within a short period of time.

In 2002 the provision was used when the Queen Mother passed on an estate worth about $80 million to the Queen.

The clause means that members of the royal family don't have to pay a 40% tax on property worth more than 350,000 pounds.

According to the financial records, the King is entitled to his income after the estate generated over twenty million dollars in revenue.

At the end of March this year, it had assets worth more than $700 million. The monarch can't sell any of the assets.

In 1993 the Queen began paying income and capital gains tax on her estate.

According to its website, the Duchy of Lancaster has a portfolio of financial investments.

About 18,000 hectares of land in England and Wales are covered by its five rural units.
