Bryce Young's clutch run leads to Alabama's winning field goal (0:37)

Young escapes the rush for a big first down. There is a time and a place for this.

2:25 AM ET

Texas is not going away.

It wasn't on Saturday. Not without its star quarterback. Not on his watch.

Texas was close to turning the page on a decade of embarrassment and embarrassment before falling to the Tide 20-19.

It was a good start for a day of chaos that was delivered by the Sunbelt. Texas A&M was stunned. Marshall defeated Notre Dame. The dagger may have been delivered by Georgia Southern. Kevin Warren wants to add six teams to the Sun Belt after it was such a great performance.

Kentucky ended Anthony Richardson's campaign before Florida had a chance to promote it. USC's offense looked like the best of Lincoln Riley's Oklahoma teams after they beat Wisconsin and Washington State did the same against Wisconsin. It was needed for the conference to take a break.

The action in Austin rattled the sport's hierarchy more than anything else.

"Texas is back!" has been the easiest joke in college football since the Longhorns lost their starting quarterback to Alabama. Thanks to Texas for providing a lot of other stuff. The monkeys are trained to steal Halloween candy. There has been a lot of craziness this decade. Texas was not a joke. It was a good competitor for the team. It was a team that, with Ewers, might have pulled the miracle.

Alabama escaped a safety after DeMarvion Overshown roughed the passer.

Texas has lost seven in a row in the past nine games. The feeling in the aftermath isn't the same as the one you're used to seeing. The Gen Z kids said that Saturday felt like a genuine vibe shift.

The Longhorns might have won with Ewers, who left the game with a shoulder injury in the first half.

If the kicker hadn't flubbed the field goal, Texas would have won.

If Texas hadn't been the team that had been on the wrong side of things, the universe wouldn't have allowed such a huge upset to happen.

The Longhorns might have won if they had a player like Young, who proved once again that he is the best player in college football.

BREAKING: I know it's early, but I'm expecting a flash flood warning to go into effect at 11 AM on Saturday in Austin.

A mix of longhorn sweat and tears will lead to rapidly rising water levels in DKR. Please plan accordingly! Turn Around, Don't Play Bama #atxwx pic.twitter.com/NMR1d8zXKT

Young accounted for 68 yards on Alabama's 11-play touchdown drive with 8:29 to go, a merciless shredding of the Texas defense that had been dominating to that point. After the Longhorns took a two-point lead, Young escaped a sack and ran 20 yards for the game-winning touchdown.

He was good when his best was needed.

In his brilliant career, Young has saved Alabama against Florida and LSU, and again Saturday, with one unflappable late drive after another. He is the best player in college football.

What is Texas like? Longhorns fans will spend the next few days wondering what might have been if Ewers had stayed in the game. The Texas defense dominated at the line of scrimmage, tormenting Young and giving the Tide virtually nothing to work with.

Alabama's struggles should be considered seriously. Will Anderson Jr. made a game-saving sack when it was needed the most. A lot of people in Texas already knew that Bill O'Brien wasn't a hall-of-FAme play caller. The O-line of the Alabama team was not as sturdy as we'd grown accustomed to seeing. The Aflac commercials have become a distraction for the team. This isn't a message board topic yet. It's easy to ignore an Alabama setback because previous predictions have resulted in embarrassment for those who thought it would happen. We've seen this version of Alabama more often in the past year than we have in the past.

Do we live in a simulation? It would lead us to believe that, yes, we are, because of the fact that a red-haired kicker namedbert auburn almost sealed a Texas win over the Tide. Unless we are in the Matrix, that is not possible.

For the majority of the past 12 years, the only case to be made for Texas' return to national prominence required a bit of theoretical physics and imagination. It isn't so crazy after Saturday.

No, Texas isn't back, but a win Saturday wouldn't have shown the Longhorns had reached their full potential. It's a journey back. Saturday was an important step in the right direction despite the final score.

Aggies fall off a cliff

It was fifteen years ago that the power was knocked off.

Do you think now is the right time? It might be a mild surprise that the Mountaineers delivered their latest upset Saturday.

App State has a recent history against the Power 5, including a loss to North Carolina last week. A late field goal gave Miami a win. App State won on the road in 2019. Penn State was taken to overtime by App last year. It lost to Wake Forest by a single point. App has been tied or ahead in the fourth quarter in eight of the past 10 times it has faced the Power 5.

Texas A&M was kind enough to upend its fans' expectations in Week 2 instead of waiting until October to do it. The Aggies had 186 total yards and a single touchdown.

A&M paid App State a lot of money. Jimbo Fisher is being paid $9 million to not develop a quarterback, which is a lot of cash without a return on investment. The ribeye at breakfast on Sunday is going to have to be reconsidered by the boosters.

During his time at Florida State, Fisher put three quarterbacks into the first round of the NBA draft. It has been difficult since JameisWinston left. In that time, no Fisher quarterback has thrown more than 20 touchdown passes. Last year, 36 different quarterbacks did that, including his current backup, Max Johnson.

No luck for the Irish

There was a silver lining to Notre Dame's loss to Ohio State, according to the coach.

In Saturday's loss to Marshall, Buchner was 21-of-38 for 221 yards and two picks, one of which was returned for a touchdown. The Irish are off to a poor start.

play

Marcus spoke after Notre Dame fell to 0-2.

It's hard to point the finger at one person. The most the Irish have allowed to a back has been 163 yards by Laborn for Marshall.

Maybe the AP voters are to blame for overrating Notre Dame. The Irish are the first team since 1986 to start 2-0 and be ranked in the top 10 for both games.

It could be Las Vegas' fault. This was the third-largest upset of Notre Dame in the past 45 years, and the biggest since the team fell to Air Force in 1996.

How is Brian Kelly responsible for this? We're not sure, but we're pretty sure he's involved.

Another agonizing loss for the Huskers

There was a third major upset when the Sun Belt upset Texas A&M and Notre Dame. Those people haven't watched Nebraska football.

Georgia Southern was a 22.5 point favorite. The Eagles were four points behind with less than a minute to go.

We are aware of how this story ends. The same thing happened in 11 straight Nebraska games. The universe is named Lucy and Scott Frost is Charlie Brown. He's trying to play a sport. The ball is being pulled away by fate.

Georgia Southern engineered an 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive and Nebraska missed a last-ditch field goal attempt.

Since the beginning of the year, the Cornhuskers are 4-7. The losses are close.

How did Frost get this? Since there aren't many multi-story buildings in Nebraska, he walks under ladders a lot. He once made a deal with a strange person who promised to make him good at checkers. He gets a kick out of yelling "MacBeth!" during off-Broadway showings of the Shakespeare play.

It's obvious that Frost will suffer this fate. He won a national championship in 2017, and no one tried to stop him from winning it.

What happened to Jimbo Fisher?

Two-point conversions

Washington State plays Wisconsin.

Washington State beat a ranked opponent on the road for the first time since 2003 when they beat Colorado. Since Oregon beat Ohio State in Week 2 last year, no Pac-12 team has beaten a ranked non- conference opponent. The Pac-12 is just 4-13 in those situations since the playoffs began.

Braelon Allen did not top 100 yards on the ground in two of his last 11 games. The man finished with 98.

play

The Washington State running back caught a pass and spun off a tackle to score a touchdown.

The state of Tennessee has a game with Pittsburgh.

There were 16 quarterback pressures, four sacks and nine tackles for loss. Pitt should have put up the spikes parking garages use to keep you from backing up instead of relying on its O-line.

In his last nine games, Hooker has completed 70% of his passes, averaged 9.4 yards per attempt, and has accounted for 26 touchdown to just two turnovers.

At Texas Tech.

There is a date with NC State on the horizon and the Red Raiders are in good shape. As far as Kittley is concerned, he seems to be doing well. Texas Tech has scored a lot of points. Kittley's offense had 94 last year.

With Houston losing, who is the favorite to become a realistic playoff team? It was a shame that Appalachian State couldn't close out North Carolina last week. It's probably the other way around.

The teams are at the same time.

Jaren Hall is the most underappreciated college quarterback. Without his top two receivers, Hall still delivered an electric performance, completing 23 of 39 for 269 yards, rushing for 28 more, and catching a touchdown pass. In his past six games, Hall has accounted for over 2,000 yards of offense with 17 touchdown and three picks. That's right, and the team is perfect in those games.

Dave Aranda made a bold call at the end of the spring to replace last year's starter with a new one. Shapen's ability to deliver when it mattered was not seen as a high priority by the Bears. The team ran the ball 52 times despite their low average. The game was marred by 14 penalties, two false starts and a goal-to-go situation in double overtime.

One shining moment for UK

Syracuse, Kansas, UCLA, North Carolina and Duke are all perfect. It's not bad for a lot of basketball schools.

Kentucky should not be added into that mix. Mark Stoops made this a football school.

Kentucky's defense dominated Florida on Saturday, turning a pick six into a 26-16 victory, giving coach Mark Stoops his 61st career win. It was the first time in 37 years that Kentucky had beaten Florida in back-to-back years.

The resume of Stoops is impressive. The former Jimbo Fisher assistant has two more victories than his boss.

Chris Rodriguez Jr., Kentucky's star running back, missed a second game in a row, but that was no problem for the Cats, who simply added a few shots of Kavosiey Smoke, who ran for 80 yards on 14 carries.

When Kentucky's team plane lands in Kentucky, we're hoping Calipari is there to take Stoops' luggage. It works at football schools.

Heisman Five

Richardson made his case for the award. The Heisman Five can change very quickly. The conference mates of Richardson maintained the top two spots.

This is the first thing. The quarterback of the Alabama football team is Bryce Young.

Since taking over the Alabama offense, Young has excelled, but he didn't show much interest in running the ball. He ran for 100 against Utah State, and his 20-yard scramble Saturday was the key to setting up the game-winning field goal against Texas. The SEC opponents wanted Young to be more versatile.

play

The score was put Alabama ahead 17-16 in the Texas game.

There are two Georgia's quarterback is Bennett.

Bennett threw for 300 yards and accounted for two touchdown in his second game, as he followed up his impressive opener. He is now third in line for the British throne. It has a ring to it.

There are three. The quarterback for the Ohio State football team.

In a 45-12 victory over Arkansas State on Saturday, Stroud threw for 351 yards and four touchdown. He was given a trophy by the Red Wolves' coach.

There are four. Williams is a USC quarterback.

This will speak for itself.

lol Caleb Williams has 142 yards and three touchdowns on ... seven throws in the first quarter

— Paolo Uggetti (@PaoloUggetti) September 11, 2022

There are five. The quarterback of North Carolina is Drake Maye.

In three career starts, Maye has completed 70% of his throws for 934 yards with 11 touchdown and one pick, and he has UNC 2-0. Texas A&M will be the first to tell you that it's not easy to beat App State.

Under-the-radar game of the day

The UTSA - Army game was a lot of fun. There were just three punts, nearly 1,000 yards, 18 third-down conversions and four game-tying touchdown.

Army threw for 300 yards in a game for the first time in a long time.

The Black Knights scored early in the second half to take a 28-14 lead, but UTSA scored three times in a row to take the lead. The game was tied with 1:03 to play. A game-winning 41-yard field goal try was missed by the Roadrunners.

Frank Harris connected with JT Clark for a touchdown in overtime and the victory.

Harris threw for 358 yards in the game, besting Army's trio of passers who threw 304 yards through the air. The last time Army hit that mark was in November of 2007.

Under-the-radar play of the day

In the second quarter of Eastern Kentucky's game against Bowling Green, the student reached to grab the ball with one hand.

play

The Falcons have a lead.

There were other highlights from this game. The score was 10-7 in Bowling Green's favor when he caught the ball, but EKU charged back to take a 31 17 lead in the third quarter. After the Falcons scored three more times to take a 38-31 lead, the Falcons had a chance to win it in the final seconds.

The fireworks started.

After seven overtimes, EKU emerged with a 59-57 win.

The most college football thing to happen Saturday

Fans across the country were without access to digital tickets on Saturday.

Imagine how frightened they would be if they missed a lot of punts. We're sympathetic to them.

The issue was solved by the afternoon. An "Error 404: Page not found" is what Iowa's offensive troubles continue to return.

After beating South Dakota State with a field goal and two safeties, Iowa lost the CyHawk trophy to Iowa State.

This is the first time since 1979 that an FBS or Division I-A team both scored 10 points or less and allowed 10 or less in their first two games of the season.

Two games into the season, Iowa has 14 points scored and 16 punts kicked, but Kirk Ferentz can't let his son call plays.

Break up the Blue Devils

It's too early to talk about Mike Elko as a coach of the year candidate.

After winning just five games in the previous two years, Elko has Duke at 2-0. With just seconds left on the clock, Duke recovered a fumbled ball in the end zone to win the game.

Yes we are all aware of the Cameron Crazies & their support for @DukeMBB but get ready in football for the WADE WACKOS cheering on @DukeFOOTBALL Last week routed Temple 30-0 & today on the road beat @NUFBFamily 31-23 ! Remember the name MIKE ELKO @CoachMikeElko

— Dick Vitale (@DickieV) September 10, 2022

There's a chance that the Blue Devil's worst team will go bowling in the first year of Elko's reign.

Maybe it's a bit of Duke's patented early season success.

The Blue Devil's are 7-1 in Power 5 non conference games in August and September. They lost to Alabama in 2019. There were five of those wins that were an underestimation.

Things haven't gone as well after the season started. Duke is just 8-28 against Power 5 teams.

Big bets and bad beats

It was one of the safest bets in the sport to bet on Alabama to cover the first half spread. In the first half of games, the team has a record of 21-7 against the spread.

The Tide was heavily favored by the bettors at the casino. The line opened with Alabama as an 11 point favorite, but that number climbed all the way to 14 as most of the tickets backed the Tide.

The Tide went to halftime tied with Texas, a reminder that even the best runners can't beat Vegas.

As Evan Hull rumbled toward the end zone with just seconds left on the clock, gamblers took the over on a potential score-tying touchdown. But Hull fumbled at the 1, and Duke recovered in the end zone to win the game.

The Sun Belt made magic. It was Marshall that knocked off Notre Dame. Then it was Texas A&M that was defeated. How much would a $100 bet pay out? It would be $8,300. The fun belt is never doubted.

A New Jersey gambler won all three legs of an in-game wager on Marshall, Washington State and App State. He had a wager of $50 and it came back $34,450.

Three years before West Virginia joined the league, Kansas was the favorite to win in every Big 12 game it played. There is progress in changing opinion. The 14-point spread was the lowest for Kansas since 2009. What took place? In overtime, the Jayhawks knocked off West Virginia. You read that correctly. In overtime, Kansas added a pick six to become the rare two-score victor. In the last four years, Kansas has covered four straight as a Big 12 favorite. I apologize to Texas. It's so funny that we didn't have to put salt on your wounds. They are the first team to win by 13 in overtime since 1998.

The Sun Belt made magic. It was Marshall that knocked off Notre Dame. Then it was Georgia Southern, which beat Nebraska. It was the first time since 1978 that four teams favored by more than one point all lost.

A bettor in New Jersey cashed in on three of them in a live bet, hitting Marshall, App State and Washington State with a $34,450 windfall.

$100 would win you $850,400 if you bet all four at the same time.

It would go a long way toward Scott Frost's buy out.
