Notre Dame dropped to 2-0 on the season with a 26-21 loss to Marshall on Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium.

It's been a tough start to the season for the Fighting Irish, who have a new head coach.

The team lost to Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl after Brian Kelly left for LSU. He has yet to record a victory as the team's head coach.

According to Adam Silverstein of CBS Sports, this is Marshall's first win over a top 10 ranked opponent in over a decade. Notre Dame had a 42 game win streak against unranked teams.

Both Marshall and Notre Dame were shut down.

The Herd broke through in the second quarter on a four-yard rushing touchdown. Marshall had a 6-0 lead after Rece Verhoff missed the extra point.

Notre Dame didn't respond until quarterback Tyler Buchner ran for a one-yard touchdown in the second quarter. The Fighting Irish took a lead on the extra point by the way of a score of 6-7.

The field goal by Marshall at the end of the first half gave them a -9 lead.

The Fighting Irish didn't respond until early in the fourth quarter, after the Herd added three points on a field goal and a two point conversion.

Everything went downhill for the Fighting Irish.

With about five minutes remaining in the game, Henry Colombi threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Devin Miller to give Marshall a 19-15 lead.

Less than a minute later, Marshall's Steven Gilmore scored a touchdown on a pick-six, giving the Herd a 26-15 lead.

After the pick-six, Drew Pyne threw an intercept to Owen Porter.

Pyne connected with Michael Mayer for a five-yard score after Marshall punted. The team that started the season ranked fifth in the AP Top 25.

The quarterback completed 18 of 32 passes for 202 yards and no touchdown. He led the team in rushing with 44 yards and 2 scores.

Pyne threw for 20 yards and one touchdown. The receiver with the most catches was Mayer with eight.

Changes could come if Notre Dame's struggles continue. They will face a tough opponent in California on Sept. 17 followed by a game against North Carolina.
