Steven Gilmore returned an intercept 37 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to help Marshall upset Notre Dame.

Gilmore, the brother of an Indianapolis Colts player, jumped into the stands after he picked off a pass and returned it for a touchdown to give Marshall a victory.

Marshall defeated a team ranked in the top 10 for the second time in school history. The Herd defeated Kansas State in 2003

Marshall coach Charles Huff said in his postgame interview that he was proud of his players. Notre Dame is one of the best football teams. Our guys told us to control what we can control. I'm proud.

The 36-year-old first-time head coach who was promoted after Brian Kelly left for LSU had lost a bowl game to Oklahoma State.

A lot of Notre Dame fans packed the stadium for this one. Notre Dame was in control in the second half in all three of the losses.

"There's no better place in this country to get our first win of this new era than here in Notre Dame Stadium," he said after walking across the campus.

The Irish had a winning streak against un ranked opponents.

Henry Colombi, a transfer from Texas Tech, threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Devin Miller. The score was set up by Laborn, who broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and sprinted to the end zone.

Huff said that Marshall has a history of showing up and playing hard. Our kids stay locked into the process and these games aren't as important to us as other people.

There was no hope for a comeback by the Irish when Owen Porter picked off Drew Pyne's pass with three minutes left. Pyne threw a touchdown pass with 14 seconds left to make it a five point game.

"No matter who it's to, it's hard to come in here after a loss," he said. It'sDisappointing We did not execute and it comes down to that.

Colombi was 16-of-21 passing for 145 yards.

Despite opening the game with a play-it-safe, ball-control game plan, the Irish struggled to get anything going.

We have to start with the head coach and say, "What do I have to do?" What are we going to do to fix the problems? "I said that." The lack of execution in all phases of the team is something that needs to be looked at.

The quarterback was 18-of-32 and had two picks. He had 44 yards on 13 carries and had eight catches for 103 yards.

The Irish took a 15-12 lead on a 1-yard run by Buchner. He ran for the 2-point conversion after keeping the ball. The Irish were unable to mount much of an offense after that.

There were two plays in the third quarter that epitomized Notre Dame's struggles. On third-and-2 from the Notre Dame 47, the Irish couldn't get the first down because the line couldn't get much push.

The drive was highlighted by a backward pass by Colombi to Talik along the left sideline for a 30-yard gain. After driving to the 4-yard line, Marshall settled for a 20-yard field goal to take the lead.

It's an evaluation of everything we're doing. It begins with me as a coach.
