The winner of the Mega Millions lottery did not claim their prize.
The winning numbers were revealed a month ago.
A state lottery official told The Guardian that they don't know if the winner knows they won a prize.
One month after the Mega Millions winning ticket was sold, the holder hasn't claimed their prize.
The winner didn't collect their new fortune after buying the ticket at a gas station.
The Mega Millions record was broken when the winning ticket was sold. If the winner comes forward, they can choose between one payment of $780.5 million cash or more than a billion dollars spread out over time.
They have until the 27th of September to claim their prize if they choose the lump sum. The annuity option will only be available after that.
Harold Mays, the director of the Illinois lottery, told The Guardian that they don't know if they won a prize. I encourage everyone to check their tickets.
If a person wins a prize of $250,000 or more, they don't have to reveal their identity. The lucky ticket holder has a year to collect their fortune. If states don't claim their money contribution will be returned.
It's not unusual for a person who wins a lot of money to not come forward immediately, according to a press release.
"For a prize of this magnitude, it's not unusual for a winner to take a little bit longer to claim the prize as they may want to seek professional legal and financial advice prior to claiming," according to the Illinois lottery.
Some people who have won the lottery have lost a lot of their money.
