In Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, a gallon of gas costs between $3 and $3.10 as the national average dropped below $3.75 despite inflation remaining high.
Texas has the cheapest gas in the country with an average price of $3.17 per gallon, followed by Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
The national average for a gallon of gas dropped to $3.72 on Saturday, down 8 cents from a week ago and 39 cents from a month ago, according to GasBuddy.
The average price of gas was three-quarters of what it cost in June.
A gallon of gas costs less than $3 in 18 states, including Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
It costs more than $4 in nine states, with the most expensive being California.
The drop comes three days after oil prices fell to $80 per barrel, an indication that a further drop in gas prices could be close by.
The price of gas went up as the price of crude oil went up after Russia invaded Ukraine. Russia, the world's second largest producer of oil behind the U.S., began selling less oil in response to European and US economic sanctions. The spike in demand is attributed to economists. The $4.33 per gallon average in March was the highest ever recorded in the U.S.
Is gas prices going to keep dropping? Patrick De Haan of GasBuddy said that the national average is expected to fall to $3.69 this weekend.
A wide margin in state taxes on gas is one of the main reasons for the difference in gas prices. Pennsylvania has the highest tax at 58.6 cents per gallon while Alaska has the lowest tax at 8.9 cents. One of the most expensive states to buy gas is California.
