The ex-president is incapable of acting out of anything other than self-interest, according to the former White House lawyer.

The man who worked in the White House as a special counsel to Trump, and who also represented the former president during the special counsel Robert Muller's investigation, was asked about Trump's refusal to admit he lost the election.

Do you think that's a flaw in his character? "What do you think?"

"My opinion is that it's not a character issue but a personality defect," he said. I believe that former President Trump is deeply wounded and incapable of acting other than in his perceived self-interest or for revenge. There are two instincts that guide his actions.

Trump refused to listen to assurances from his own Justice Department and former Attorney General that the election wasn't stolen due to massive fraud.

It takes strong advisers to help Trump understand what is in his own best interests.

"Unfortunately, he's gone through some talented advisors, good advisors, chewed up, and is working with way too many people who tell him what he wants to hear," he said.

The slew of Trump-endorsed candidates, including those running for key statewide elected offices, embraced the former president's lies that the 2020 election was stolen.

"I don't think it's a good idea," he said. The current administration and Trump have no interest in healing. I do not believe that the future of America is enhanced by either position. The safety net of leadership that we need is nowhere to be found.

The investigation into whether Trump kept classified documents at his Florida residence after leaving office is one of the ongoing investigations.

The wide-ranging federal probe into the January 6 insurrection, and Trump's role in it, poses a greater legal threat to the former president than the search at Mar-a-Lago.

The president is in serious legal water because of the obstruction he took in connection with the January 6 proceeding and the attempts to interfere in the election count, according to an interview with CBS News.

The Justice Department has made it clear that they intend to prosecute him regardless of what happens.
