This is not a close-up of an orange peel, but a picture of the sun.

The first images from the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope have arrived. The world is getting an idea of how powerful this telescope really is, thanks to these snapshots. A region about the size of nine Russias is shown at a resolution of 11 miles perpixel.

The sun is less than 94 million miles from Earth.

The observatory will take pictures of the sun and measure the magnetic fields of solar stuff that affect space weather. Power grids and telecommunications systems can be disrupted.

Natural events in space can be damaging because scientists don't know how to forecast them. All of Quebec, Canada, was without power for 12 hours in March 1989. Radio Free Europe's radio signals were jammed as well.

Astronomers will use the telescope to study the underlying physics of space weather. The ground-based observatory will work in conjunction with the telescopes capturing data in space, as well as the Solar Orbiter, a collaborative mission of the European Space Agency and NASA.

The Inouye telescope will transform how our nation and the planet are predicted and prepared for events like solar storms.

The volcano Haleakal is 10,000 feet above sea level. Haleakal means house of the sun. The myth says that Maui lassoed the star in the sky from the peak of the volcano to make days last longer.

The facility at the site was not developed because of its name. The summit has special environmental conditions that allow the study of the solar corona, according to foundation leaders.

The project started construction in 2012 COVID-19 became fully operational in February, despite the fact that it slowed down.
