Sport has been paying respect after Queen Elizabeth II died aged 96

Sport resumed on Saturday after the death of the UK's longest serving monarch.

All English, Welsh and Northern Irish football, as well as senior football in Scotland, was postponed this weekend, but other sports decided to go ahead and play.

Cricket

England's final Test against South Africa was washed out on the first day because of rain and then the second day was called off because of Queen Elizabeth II's health.

A minute's silence was observed before the national anthem followed by applause from the crowd at The Oval.

Golf

The BMW PGA Championship resumed on Saturday after being stopped on Thursday.

A two-minute period of silence was observed as staff, players and caddies gathered on the putting green in front of the first tee.

The King was proclaimed as monarch at the Accession Council as spectators watched on big screens.

Rugby union

The first game of the season in England was played on Saturday.

Rugby league

The Rugby Football League said on Friday that the Super League elimination play-offs would go ahead.

"This has been a difficult decision - we have taken into account the desire expressed by players and clubs at community level to come together to share their grief, and to celebrate the life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," the RFL said in a statement.

During her 70 years as a patron of the RFL, the Queen twice presented the Challenge Cup to the winning captains - in 1960 and 1967.
