When B.J. Anderson came back to College Station, he would have a pile of highlights to watch. The offensive line coach used to look for players who caught his attention. He was an O-lineman, so when he came across a player, he would pass it on to the right position coach. Anderson walked into Kliff Kingsbury's office in 2012 to discuss Patrick Mahomes, a quarterback from Whitehouse, Texas. Anderson said that it doesn't take a real football guru to watch five minutes of Pat's tape and see how good he is. Pat Mahomes, the quarterback's father, was a pitcher in the Major Leagues. It was the same thing. He said that his dad was a legend. It was the first time that he watched the play. He thought he was raw. He made plays. In every game he played, he was the best player. He just wasn't ready. After Kingsbury was hired as Texas Tech's head coach, he met with Mahomes. At least on the college level, the coach that believed in me was the one at Kingsbury. When the ArizonaCardinals host the Kansas CityChiefs on Sunday, they will face off against their former quarterback, who was discovered a decade ago. The program is on CBS Going against him will be a little strange. It's going to be enjoyable. He became a quarterback guru by the end of the 2012 season. He was the play caller for the University of Houston offense that led the country with 599.1 yards per game in 2011; he followed that up by helping Johnny Manziel become an NFL first-round pick. One of the hottest names in college football after the 2012 season was K-town. He returned to his alma mater when Texas Tech decided not to keep him. The coaches from the previous staff were aware of Mahomes. Dylan was a year ahead of Mahomes at Whitehouse and they were able to recruit him. Even though he hadn't seen Patrick play in a high school game, Kingsbury made recruiting him a priority. Patrick did a good job with his highlight reel. Our experts answer questions and give fantasy tips. The team previews are not final. Who will inherit the throne? We're working on a project.

He thought he could be. I didn't think he'd still be doing it the way he does it, I loved how he extended plays. He's probably the best at it.
We went after him and knew we had to get him.
Adam Cook, the high school football coach at Mahomes, said that after he got the job, Kingsbury told him that.
There wasn't much to say about him back in the day. Craig said that the book on the quarterback was that he was a great leader.
What he would look for or his methods weren't always pretty. He was efficient. He made plays even though he wasn't perfect. He was one of those guys who just got it done.
In the long run, being first paid off was a good thing.
Pat said that Kingsbury was a smooth operator. I came in and said I liked Patrick. I would love for him to come up and see me.
When he courted Patrick, he couldn't depend on his reputation as a quarterback at Texas Tech. Pat didn't know much about the man. He came into his recruitment of Patrick with a plan, something that earned him a lot of praise from the family.
He sat with Patrick's parents and gave them a recruiting pitch. He mapped out how Patrick could play both sports at Texas Tech. Patrick was raw and the coach wasn't promising him a starting job, but he thought Patrick could play in the NFL.
It was important for Patrick to have an opportunity to play baseball at Texas Tech, even though he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers. Baseball coach Tim Tadlock talked to the family during their visit to Lubbock. Patrick will be playing both sports.
Pat didn't think Patrick would play football in college. He tried to get him to stop playing football.
Pat thought that he was spending his time. I asked what we were doing. Either we're playing baseball or basketball in college. We are spending too much time doing football.
Patrick said he couldn't sit in the stands of a football game and not help his teammates. Pat realized his son could be a college football player when he was recruited. Pat thought a football scholarship would be the best way for Patrick to get to play college baseball.
Patrick received a scholarship less than a month after he was hired by Texas Tech.
He offered me whenever he had something to say. He told me I would be allowed to be myself. I was going to be allowed to play baseball. He was going to allow me to be the same person.
He was allowed by the NCAA to go as many times to Whitehouse as he wanted. Patrick was going to play a basketball game, but he wouldn't be able to make it.
The quarterback, Patrick, was worked out at camps by the coach. He knew what he had in Patrick.
He had a special ability and characteristics that made him a real winner. Guys were drawn to him immediately. We were aware that would be a big deal for us.
Patrick was named the Texas AP Player of the Year after a big senior year.

The quarterback wasn't getting a lot of attention from other schools. Texas Tech was the only school that offered Patrick a scholarship.
Patrick wasn't the type of traditional quarterback that schools were looking for a decade ago. He would be one of the most sought after quarterbacks in the country, with offers flooding his mailbox.
Cook said that some of that was due to the fact that the coaches were comfortable with the quarterback's freedom. Their job is dependent on that. Their success is dependent on the decisions they make. Patrick compromises the old style of coaching by playing differently.
Patrick thinks it was because he wasn't as active on the football camp circuit as he could have been.
Patrick did not go out to any of those things. I was from a small town in East Texas and I played football in college, but I didn't make myself visible because I played baseball the whole time or basketball after that.
Kliff was able to find me down there and offer me.
His time has arrived.

The Major League Baseball draft is in June and teams were scared away if Patrick decided to play baseball.
He was a good baseball player. Shawn said that Patrick was one of the top guys.
Randi was the one who had to sell the most. Patrick wanted Cook to approve his school of choice.
On a recruiting trip to Lubbock, Patrick and Pat were driven around campus on a personal tour, despite there being about 60 other recruits on campus, Pat said. They went back to Kingsbury's office and he showed them a video that had Manziel highlights and clips from the trophy ceremony, as well as Patrick's highlights. The last screen had a question.
Pat said that Patrick's eyes were large. He wanted to make a decision then.
Pat wouldn't allow his son to say he was going to play at Texas Tech without talking to his mom. She was at the Red Raiders spring game.
The work was done. Patrick made a commitment to Texas Tech on April 21st. It didn't make much of a difference in the recruiting waters.
Patrick and his mother walked out of the office after Patrick spoke. Pat was the only one who wanted to speak. He made it clear that he wasn't going to be a crazy dad who showed up to watch practice. He wouldn't complain about playing time. He had a single request for the man.
I told you that I would give you my son. Pat said, "You take care of my son, just like you would take care of your son." He did exactly what he said he would do. That is the reason I love him. That's a lot.
After Patrick pleaded guilty, Kingsbury committed to Patrick again.
His board was wiped clean of quarterbacks.
He was Patrick's man.
Cook thought that spoke volumes to him. It showed me a lot about the mindset of the coach and how he was showing Patrick that he was all-in.
Patrick was a quarterback who wasn't traditional. The types of quarterbacks that Kingsbury had success with were those with a high level of accuracy. He tinkered with Patrick's mechanics but never changed who he was at his core.
Patrick said that he was great for him because he was really raw at the quarterback position.
It might be too great.
Patrick was the leader in passing in the country. When he was considering leaving Texas Tech for the draft, he jumped into recruitment mode again.
Patrick was projected to be a second-round pick by the National Football League. Patrick was going to stay for one more year. He met with Patrick and his family in a private room. Pat was aware of what was going to happen.
He wouldn't want him to come back. Pat chuckled. It wasn't an issue. He made valid points with what he said and Patrick was coming off hand surgery. There were a lot of reasons that he could have returned, but Pat just felt like he was ready to leave.
Patrick was told to go "all-in" with his decision. The recruiting effort was pointless in the back of his mind.
They gave me the opportunity, but it was over. I did what I could.
The second quarterback taken afterMitch Trubisky was Patrick, who was picked 10th by the Chiefs.
Patrick and Kingsbury keep in touch. The Red Raiders put up 63 points against Murray State, and they were texting with Texas Tech's offensive coach, who was a student assistant when Patrick was at Texas Tech.
It will be cool for the quarterback to play against the college coach who believes in him first.
Patrick is still interested in beating him.
I hope I get the win, because you will have some bragging rights. "That's right." It's going to be an awesome moment that we'll have forever because I see him every once in a while out in Lubbock.
