Alcaraz outlasts Tiafoe to win another epic

One victory away from becoming the youngest man in a decade to win a major, Alcaraz is a potential Grand Slam champion.

The teenager was able to get the opportunity by coming through an epic contest.

He won a lengthy five-set match against the 22nd seed, which took him more than four hours and four match points.

The American was trying to become the first American man to reach a US Open final since Andy Roddick in 2006 when he took the lead in the opener.

Going into the fourth set, Alcaraz had won 10 of 12 games and was in front.

After falling a break down early in the fourth, he looked tired and flat. He saved a match point with a nerveless drop shot, after recovering from two breaks.

He equaled a record set by Pete Sampras in 2000 by making it eight tie-breaks, so there would be a decider.

After coming back from 2-0 down, Tiafoe hit a double fault to lose his serve and Alcaraz took over.

An inch-perfect lob from the Spaniard had helped turn the fifth game and he produced another to bring the fourth match point which he converted.

Ruud earns another shot at winning first major

Casper Ruud hits a return against Karen Khachanov in their 2022 US Open men's singles semi-final in New York
Casper Ruud has won nine ATP titles in his career, but never one of the sport's four majors

Three months after losing to Nadal in the French Open final, Ruud has a chance to win a Grand Slam.

The world number seven, who has won eight of his nine tour titles on clay courts, said he was surprised by his run at the final major tournament of the season.

After reaching the Miami final in April and the Montreal semi-finals last month, he has shown he has the ability to win on hard courts.

Both players broke for the lead in the first set, but failed to consolidate and allow their opponent to tie the game.

The opener was decided in a tie-break when Ruud won a 55 shot rally with a backhand.

The outcome of the match was determined by showing a lack of nerves.

In the second set, he didn't drop a point in his service games, and he broke the 27th seed twice to take a two-set lead.

In the third set, the player who played at a high level to beat Australia's Nick Kyrgios improved and was able to extend the match when he broke the player in the twelfth game.

The man regained control quickly. A running forehand winner on break point put him into a 2-1 lead in the fourth set and gave him the confidence to serve for the match.
