With pre-orders for the iPhone 14 lineup now open, many customers will be wondering if it's the right time to upgrade.

Some customers may want to wait until next year to upgrade to the iPhone 14 models, since they offer some substantial improvements with Emergency SOS via satellite, crash detection, camera improvements, and more. The best time to upgrade will be different for everyone, but what to expect from next year's new phones will be important to a lot of people.

It will be 10 years since the launch of the popular iPhone 5s and 5 years since Apple revealed the first large full-screen iPhone design. The rumored " iPhone 15 " lineup is currently rumored.

USB-C Instead of Lightning

In the second half of the 20th century, Apple is expected to release at least some of the iPhone 15 models with a USB-C port instead of the Lightning port. Mark Gurman said that Apple is testing a new version of the phone with a different port. Gurman said that Apple will release a Lightning to USB-C accessory if it switches the phone to the new standard.

It was thought that Apple would keep the Lightning port on the iPhone until it no longer required any ports at all. Apple seems to have altered its plans.

There is regulatory pressure to standardize ports in India and Brazil. The EU is once again moving forward with legislation to force Apple to make their products compatible with theusb-c

Since the release of the 2012's iPhone 5, Apple has used the Lightning port on all of its mobile devices. Most other devices, including Apple's own iPad and Macs, have switched to the newer, more versatile, and more capable,usb-c as a means of connecting. The benefits of faster data transfer speeds, especially for large ProRes video files, and consistency between devices have led to calls for Apple to switch to the Universal Serial Bus on the iPhone.

It's not clear which models of the phone will have ausb-c port, but it's possible that Apple will reserve it for the "pro" models. It was exclusive to the iPad Pro for several years before it was available in the iPad Air and iPad mini. The last flagship iPhone with a Lightning port could be this year's iPhone 14 Pro.

The Magic Keyboard, Mouse, and Trackpad trio, as well as the MagSafe battery pack, will also switch to theusb-c standard in the future.

Dynamic Island: No More Notch on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus

Ross Young is a display expert who often reveals accurate insights into Apple's plans. The feature we now know as "Dynamic Island" is a software feature that makes the cutouts of the iPhone 14 Pro appear as a single, unified "pill".

The Dynamic Island is not a static cutout and can change in size and shape to blend into the user interface and provide new visual tools. It is a small pill-shaped cutout that Apple uses to match different tasks such as Apple Pay and Face ID.

  • How the iPhone 14 Pro's New 'Dynamic Island' Works

Young believes that this design will trickle down to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus next year and unify the entire lineup under one front-facing design. With the Dynamic Island being one of the most eye-catching and popular features of the iPhone 14 Pro, this could provide a substantial upgrade for users of the standard iPhone 15 models.

Under-Display Touch ID

According to The Wall Street Journal and Mark Gurman, Apple tested under-screen fingerprints for some models of the phone, but decided against it at the time.

In a September 2021 research note, he predicted that Apple would launch at least one new model with an under-screen fingerprint sensor in the second half of 2023, which would line up with the launch of the iPhone 15 models, but he has not shared any further information about the feature.

3nm A17 Chip, But No Custom 5G Modem

The A17 chip for the iPhone 15 lineup is said to be fabricated using TSMC's 3nanometer process. 30 percent better power consumption and 15 percent better performance can be found in the 3nm process, which is behind the A14 and A15.

It is not clear if the A17 will be available in all of the iPhone 15 models, but Apple could use the A16 chip in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus instead.

Apple was rumored to be working on a custom 5G modem that would debut in all of the iPhone 15 models in over a year's time. Apple's acquisition of Intel's modem chip business is thought to have started the work to move away fromQUALCOMM. TSMC, the Taiwanese company that currently supplies all of Apple's custom chips, was also rumored to be designing a 5G baseband modem.

Apple's efforts may have failed, with development on the chip reportedly stalling. Previously, it was thought that only 20 percent of the 5G chips for the 2023 iPhones would be supplied by Qualcomm.

It's not clear why Apple won't have its modem ready in time for the next iteration of the phone, but the company has been trying to move away from the company for a long time. It was not possible for Apple to use Intel 5G chips in the 2020 iPhone because Intel was not able to meet Apple's standards. Apple settled its lawsuit withQualcomm and has used the company's 5G modem in its lineup.

It will probably take more time for the work to be completed to a satisfactory standard for use in iPhones and other devices in the future.

Periscope Camera on iPhone 15 Pro Max

After years of rumors, the periscopic telephoto lens is expected to be included in the next iteration of the Apple device.

Apple's periscope camera system is being hampered by the fact that much of the technology is guarded by other patents, though it has still filed periscope camera patents of its own, and is considering purchasing the components from existing patent holders. The "ball-type actuator" technology is owned by SAMSUNG.

The 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro model will retain the current telephoto lens for optical zoom, but the periscope camera lens will be added to the Max model.

Light entering the lens is reflected by a mirror towards the camera's sensor. The change in direction in which the light travels allows for a longerfolded setup inside phones, allowing users to zoom in further without any blurriness. Genius is expected to be Apple's main supplier of such a lens.

There are some periscope-equipped phones on the market. The S22 Ultra has up to 10x optical and 100x digital zooms. The periscope lens would be added to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The 1/3-inch sensor will have up to 6x optical zoom and sensor-shift stabilization. The 3x optical zoom limitation on the iPhone 14 Pro models is not new.

Final Thoughts

There is plenty of time for Apple's plans to change, but it is important to take rumors with a pinch of salt. It's highly likely that there is some truth to the rumors because of the track record of many analysts and leakers.

The periscope camera, Touch ID, and even the Dynamic Island could make for a significant upgrade if they are included in the lineup. Customers could face more of a dilemma about which device to buy if the features in the iPhone 15 models are more differentiated.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro will be arriving to customers on September 16th.
