A state of emergency was declared by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday after a fourth county in the state was found to have a case of the disease.
The New York Health Department said Friday that the disease has recently been found in wastewater in Nassau County.
The discovery came after local officials began monitoring wastewater after the first case of vaccine-derived polio, which can still occasionally cause an outbreak.
New Yorkers are being urged to get the vaccine, three doses of which offer anywhere from 99% to 100% protection against the disease.
The emergency order allows healthcare providers to give the vaccine to more people, while also requiring them to give the vaccine to the New York Department of Health.
Some New York counties have low vaccine rates. Orange County has a rate of 58.68%), while Rockland County has a rate of 60.34%. The vaccine rate in Nassau County is slightly higher. The percentage of children in New York City who have received three doses of the vaccine has fallen since the beginning of the year.
A new vaccine campaign was announced last month by local health officials in London to help boost coverage in children under 10 years old.
It is a disease that can be spread through contact with fecal samples. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 15,000 people a year would develop paralysis from the disease if the vaccine hadn't been developed. In recent years, there have been cases of vaccine-derived cases that have arisen because of the eradication of the disease. The live virus can be shed in a person's stool if they have received a vaccine. After contact with the sewage, the virus can change into a new form. New York health officials said last month that samples of the disease had been found in sewage in New York City and in wastewater in two New York counties. There is no cure for the disease, but it can be prevented through vaccinations. The New York Health Department said that children should get four shots of the vaccine.
According to health officials in New York City, there's a disease in the city's sewage.
A state of emergency has been declared in New York due to a high incidence of the disease.
