Kathy Hochul, the governor of New York, declared a state of emergency on Friday in order to increase the number of people who get the vaccine.

Sewage samples from four counties in the New York metropolitan area have been found to contain the disease. Nassau was added to the list of counties.

According to state health officials, the samples tested positive for some types of the disease.

In July of this year, an unvaccinated adult in Rockland County became the first person in the U.S. to suffer from paralysis from a vaccine- preventable disease.

In order to boost the immunization rate in areas where it has fallen, the network of vaccine administrators will be expanded.

People who are unvaccinated need to get their shots as soon as possible. If you are unsure of your vaccine status, you should contact a health-care provider, clinic or the county health department.

We can't roll the dice on the issue of vaccine safety. New Yorkers shouldn't accept any risk at all. Nearly all people who receive the recommended vaccine are protected against diseases.

The vaccine rate for the disease is low in some areas. In Rockland, there is a vaccine rate of 60 percent. The health department says the average for the state is about 79%.
