The death of a person who had been diagnosed with monkeypox was being investigated by Los Angeles County.
More cases of the disease have been reported in the United States this year than anywhere else in the world. The deaths of two people are being investigated by health officials.
The chief medical officer for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said at a news conference on Thursday that an autopsy on the person who died in the county could take days or weeks to complete. The person who died in Texas had no underlying medical conditions.
There is no additional information available at this time. We will share them when they become available.
The state of California and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will work with the county to see if guidelines for how to treat people with monkeypox need to be updated.
According to the C.D.C., there have been more than 56,600 confirmed cases of monkeypox in more than 100 countries.
There was a death in Texas last month of a person who had been diagnosed with monkeypox. The Department of State Health Services said that an adult in Harris County had died of monkeypox.
The case is being investigated to determine the cause of death.
The deaths of 18 people who had been diagnosed with monkeypox had been reported to the WHO. The W.H.O. said there was a decrease in the number of weekly new cases around the world. Men who have sex with men who have a median age of 36 years are most affected by the outbreak.
In major U.S. cities, the spread of monkeypox appears to be declining.
The director of the C.D.C. warned two weeks ago that the decrease was not across the country.
She said in the news conference that the numbers were still increasing. The rate of increase is not as high. We are still seeing increased activity. Things aren't even across the country because we are a very Diverse country.
