Los Angeles health officials are looking into the death of a person.
Dr. Rita Singhal is the director of disease control in Los Angeles County. Singhal said officials don't have any more details at the moment.
Singhal told reporters during a press conference that monkeypox is being investigated in two deaths in the US.
The death of an adult in the Houston area who was diagnosed with monkeypox was reported by health officials in Texas. The person had a compromised immune system.
People with weak immune systems are more likely to get monkeypox. There is a painful rash that looks like blisters.
A report published Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that 42% of patients with monkeypox were HIV positive. The study found that people with HIV were more likely to be hospitalized.
According to the CDC, the US is trying to contain the largest monkeypox outbreak in the world with more than 21,000 cases in 50 states.
According to the CDC, there have been nine monkeypox deaths confirmed worldwide. There have been deaths in Brazil, Cuba, India, Nigeria, and Spain.
Since the outbreak began, more than 56,000 cases have been reported in 96 countries.
Gay and bisexual men are most likely to spread monkeypox during sex, though anyone can get it through close contact with someone who has the disease.
Federal health officials said this week that the outbreak appears to be slowing as more and more treatments are available. In August, it took 25 days for cases to double, compared to eight days in July.
More than 460,000 monkeypox vaccine doses have been given to the U.S. According to the CDC, about 1.6 million gay and bisexual men who have HIV or who are taking medication to reduce their risk of contracting HIV have the highest risk from monkeypox.
The vaccine is given in two parts. People at risk need to get the second shot. After the second dose of the immune system, it takes two weeks for it to peak.
