Amazon has agreed to buy Cloostermans, a company that makes robots that can stack objects. Cloostermans' tech is used by Amazon to package products.
After the acquisition closes, Cloostermans' 200 or so employees will join the Amazon Global Robotics division in Europe, dedicating their time to build tech that suits Amazon's needs. Amazon said in a press release that it will more rapidly deploy solutions in its workplace that support employees in their roles and improve safety at work, and also help reduce packaging waste. The company believes that having more robots will make workers safer.
Amazon is increasing automation with the introduction of morerobots. Proteus is the first autonomously warehouse robot. The device is able to move carts alone.
Employees at a Staten Island facility became the first Amazon warehouse workers to win a union election as a result of the Cloostermans acquisition. According to the company, automation won't replace human workers at warehouses for a decade.
