The leader of the Greens Party in Australia called on Australia to become a republic after the death of the Queen.

In addition to the United Kingdom, Elizabeth II was the head of state of 14 other nations, including Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

Australia last held a referendum on becoming a republic in 1999, but it failed with more than half of the vote against it.

New Zealand's Prime Minister has previously said she expects her country to become a republic within her lifetime.

Parts of the Caribbean where British rule is linked to a history of slavery and where Prince William and his wife Kate were met with protests during a recent visit seem to have a stronger sentiment.

Jamaica, the most populous Caribbean nation in the Commonwealth realm, began the process of transitioning into a republic in June and is expected to remove the British monarch as its head of state before its next general election in 25 years.
