  • Google has rolled out a new beta release for Pixel phones running Android 13.
  • The QPR1 Beta 1 build includes some changes to audio, additional eSIM support, and more.
  • Some animations hint at Google's upcoming Pixel Tablet with Google Assistant docking features.

After a brief break from the stable version of the mobile operating system, the search engine giant is back with a new version.

Some of the new features that will be arriving in the upcoming feature drops should be seen by the update. A feature drop is a quarterly update that brings a host of features to the device. The next one isn't expected until December, but the latest build should give us some idea of what to expect.

The senior technical editor at Esper dove into the update to show off some of the new features.

The new Safety Center combines the security and privacy hubs. According to Rahman, the feature wasn't initially live, but he was able to get it working and it's ready for prime time.

Even though the September patch only just rolled out, the October patch comes with it.

Android's new "Safety Center", ie. the unified security & privacy settings, wasn't live for me after updating, but after manually enabling it, it seems it's ready to go live! There's no longer placeholder text ("no problemo maestro" in the scanner. pic.twitter.com/759yu60Qc0September 8, 2022

There are a few new audio-related features. Spacial Audio appears to be present in the update, but they don't seem to work well.

Clear calling is a feature that will help make calls more clear. It won't work with wi-fi calling and will only be available on most mobile networks.

There are references to the Pixel Tablets teased earlier this year. While the company did not provide many details about the device, a new animation found in the beta appears to give us more clues about the future of the device.

When set on a dock, the animation shows a device charging. While on the dock, there is an animation showing the Assistant logo, suggesting that the device may be a dual-purpose device.

Additional eSIM support, a new animation for split-screen mode, and the return of unified search are some of the changes. You can check out Rahman's thread for a more in-depth look at the features.

The developer has dug into the code and found references to a possible foldable device and a "higher-end tablet" that may be different from the one that will be launched by the search giant.

The camera HAL, however, seems to indicate something completely different. “Felix”, F10, includes multiple references to folded and unfolded states, as well as outer and inner cameras. pic.twitter.com/YrwJ482hdzSeptember 8, 2022

Some of the user-facing changes will probably show up in the next feature drop. We may have a better idea of what to expect at the end of the year.

Enrolling is easy for those who are not on the alpha. If you enroll, you won't be able to unenroll for a while without wiping your phone clean. If you haven't yet installed the new version of the program, you can easily duck out.

The newPixel 6a is eligible to be included in the eligible phones. The release notes state that there are bound to be bugs, so it's a good idea to try thebeta at your own risk.
