The Justice Department is looking into Donald Trump's main fundraising arm, Save America, with a federal grand jury doling a new set of subpoenas this week to aides who worked in the Trump administration and the former president's election campaign.
The DOJ is looking into the events leading up to the Capitol riot, according to ABC News. The Justice Department is investigating the moments leading up to the insurrection, attempts to obstruct that inquiry, and the scheme to overturn the 2020 vote using a slate of fake voters.
According to the New York Times, a number of current and former aides were subpoenaed. William B. Harrison, William S. Russell, and Nicholas Luna worked in the White House.
The interest in Trump's Save America PAC is a new development in the DOJ's probe, although it's unclear what actions the fundraising vehicle is being investigated for or how it relates to the inquiry into the January 6, 2021, attack.
Federal prosecutors are interested in the spending practices of a political action committee. According to a source familiar with the subpoenas' language, the department may be looking into whether those associated with the political action committee used baseless claims about the 2020 election to cheat people.
Save America did not reply immediately.
The development comes at a time when Trump is being investigated by the Justice Department.
The DOJ appealed the judge's order that would allow for an independent party to review thousands of documents that were seized from Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort.
Federal prosecutors wrote in their filing that the appeal would probably succeed.
