IRVING, Texas -- The College Football Playoff management committee on Thursday began working toward implementing a 12-team playoff as early as the 2024 season, but a sense of progress and congeniality was also hampered by a quicker than expected timetable.

The American Athletic Conference has a focus on the timetable. If it's going to happen, we have to get this done. The goal would be to make it happen.

The 11 presidents and chancellors who control the playoff voted unanimously last week in favor of expanding the field to 12 teams, and the 10 commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director met at the airport for about 412 hours. The board of managers urged the Commissioners to get it done sooner if possible since they could not agree on a format.

Kevin Warren said he felt better after the meeting than he did before. We have common goals and it was a very productive meeting. We have a lot of work to do, but I'm happy where we are. There is a lot of work to be done.

Bill said that they hope to have an answer in the fall. Atlanta will host the national championship game in 2025, followed by Miami in January of the following year, when the current contract ends.

If the Commissioners can implement the new format for the last two seasons, there will be $450 million in gross revenue.

JimPhillips said they had a discussion every year, but that he was "optimistic."

There have been four or five really good calls. We're all trying to figure out how to do this thing since we haven't been off course. There are a lot of people in the room. There is a lot of optimism, but it is the details that matter. The devil is in the details.

The Big Ten offices in Illinois are where the Commissioners and Swarbrick are going to meet again this month. Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson was asked how confident he was about a 12-team field in the future.

There are a lot of pieces. It will not be by lack of effort.

The ranking of the teams will be determined by the committee. Each conference champion will receive a first-round bye in the playoffs. The first round of the playoffs will be played on the second or third weekend of December. The championship game will be played at a neutral site and the quarterfinals and semifinals will be played on a rotation.

On Saturday, before Georgia and Oregon kicked off the season in Atlanta, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey expressed doubts about the debut of a 12-team playoff before the 2020 season.

He admitted it was a possibility after the meetings Thursday.

Sankey said that there was a lot of work to be done.
