The MetaResponsible Innovation Team was supposed to address potential harms to society caused by Facebook's products. According to the Wall Street Journal, most of the team will stay on with other teams. The company was committed to the team's goals, but didn't give a reason for the change in strategy
According to a post written by Margaret Stewart, the Facebook VP who oversaw the team, it was formed several years ago. She wrote last year that the team was made up of engineers as well as people with civil rights and ethics and advised the company's product teams on potential harms. According to The Journal, the Meta employee who led the team is no longer with the company.
The Responsible Innovation team is not the only one that has been shuffled. The Responsible Artificial Intelligence group was folded into Meta's social impact team. For the first time in its history, the company's revenue has shrunk. Meta has slowed its hiring and axed some projects due to rumors of layoffs.
