The sports world was quick to react after Queen Elizabeth II passed away. The Queen served as the United Kingdom's monarch for 70 years, and athletes from around the world paid tribute to her on social media.

The U.K. is expected to enter a mourning phase following the death of the longest serving British monarch. The BMW PGA Championship was suspended for a day after news of Elizabeth II's death became public. The U.S. Open will hold a moment of silence before the semifinals to honor Her Majesty the Queen.

"On behalf of our members and everyone connected with the European Tour group and the BMWPGA Championship, it is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II." She was an inspiration to everyone. The BMW PGA Championship has been suspended for the rest of Thursday and the flags at the club will be flown at half mast.

There will be no play at the BMW PGA Championship on Friday and the golf course will be closed. There will be further updates on the resumed play in the future. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the Royal Family.
