The Royal family's line of succession takes a leap forward after Charles III takes the throne.

Princess Elizabeth became Queen after the death of her father, King George VI, in 1952, so her oldest son now takes the crown.

He has waited his whole life for this role.

He will be the oldest person to be crowned in British history at the ripe old age of 72. His reign won't last long.

Queen Elizabeth II was Britain's longest reigning monarch and steered the country through a period of remarkable change.

The child of a royalspare was thought to be unlikely to rule. When Edward VIII abdicated in favor of her father in 1936, she became heir to the throne at the age of 11.

In a new era, King Charles will seek to bring his own vision to the role, while simultaneously exploiting her popularity and support.

Prince William and his wife will take on more public roles as they help steer the monarchy into a new era.

Recent years have seen the relocation of the Duke and the Duke of York from public life to private life.

The Dukes can only be changed by an Act of Parliament.

In order to create gender equality, the legislation was amended in 2013).

Changes meant that Princess Charlotte wouldn't lose her spot to her brother.

The Queen's death has made senior royals move up a step.

Prince Harry has two children, Archie and Lilibet, and they are both in the top seven. Prince Andrew is now in the 8th position.

The first six people in the line of succession are required to get the monarch's consent to marry. Descendants of George II used to have to seek permission.

Those who marry Roman Catholics are no longer disqualified from the line of succession.

The line of succession

The United Kingdom and the Commonwealth Realms have a new king.

How will he be replaced when he dies?

The new line of succession was created after the Queen died.

1. The Duke of Cambridge

Prince William will inherit the throne one day. If his father is around for a long time, he may have 30 or so years to wait.

2. Prince George

It is unlikely that anyone will see another Queen on the throne in their lifetime because the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first born son will be King George VII.

3. Princess Charlotte

The seven-year-old sister of Prince George will have the same problems as Prince Harry and the Duke of York in trying to find the right role for herself. If Prince George killed her, she would become Queen.

The sex of the baby will no longer be relevant to his or her place in the succession. Princess Charlotte is the first Royal princess to be born within the direct line of succession since the Princess Royal in 1950 and is likely to inherit the title one day.

4. Prince Louis

The line of succession was changed because of the birth of the third child. The fourth in line to the throne is Prince George.

5. The Duke of Sussex

Prince Harry spent most of his life being the third in line to the throne, behind his father and brother, before being bumped down after the births of his nephew and niece. Archie moved up to sixth place after becoming seventh in line to the throne.

6. Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor

The heir to the throne is Archie, the three-year-old son of Harry andMeghan.

7. Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor

8. The Duke of York

Prince Andrew, who was second in line to the throne, is no longer a member of the Royal family.

He had to take a break from public duties after his Newsnight interview. After his attempts to have his sexual assault case thrown out failed, he decided to give back his military affiliations and Royal patronages.

9. Princess Beatrice

There was a problem of how to combine a title with a need to find work. She treated herself to four holidays after quitting her job at Sony.

The first member of the Royal family to run a marathon in 2010, he is currently the vice president of partnerships and strategy at Afiniti.

She married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in July 2020 at The Royal Chapel of All Saints at Royal Lodge. A daughter was born to the couple in September last year.

10. Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi

The little girl is the first child of Princess Beatrice and Mr Mapelli Mozzi, who was previously married to another person.

The rest of the family, including Princess Eugenie, one rung down, have moved into 10th place.

Prince Edward was a case study in the pitfalls of trying to earn a living when your mother is the Queen.

The Prince of Wales was furious when a camera crew working for him broke the terms of an agreement to leave him. He is now working full time.

16. The Princess Royal

The Princess Royal is still behind her three brothers in the line of succession despite being the Queen's second born child.

She carries out hundreds of official engagements each year without much attention from the national media.

The Princess's son, Peter, will be 17th in line, with his two daughters in 18 and 19th place.

The princess has four children, two of which are younger than four years old, and one of which is a one-year-old.
