Britain's monarchy has a very interesting royal family tree. King George V and his wife Mary had six children. Four of them had children of their own. Well-known royals like Prince George of Cambridge and his younger siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have a lot of lesser-known cousins. The House of Windsor is not very old. King George V was a descendant of Queen Victoria. He was a member of the House of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha. Albert, prince consort, the husband of Queen Victoria injected the German dynasty into the British monarchy. World War I caused English attitudes toward Germany to sour. George V made a big PR move in response to the rising anti-German sentiment. He changed the names of Gotha and Saxe- Coburg to Windsor. Windsor Castle is where George V's granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II still resides on weekends. The British royal family tree begins with the family that began it all. King George VI took the throne after his brother abdicated. Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret were his children. Descendants of George VI are expected to inherit the throne in the future. Queen Elizabeth II was the longest reigning British monarch. She passed away at the age of 96. Charles is set to inherit the throne and become King Charles III. A Clarence House representative confirmed in 2020 that the heir tested positive for the coronaviruses but is in good health. Prince George would follow his father in the line of succession. On January 8, 2020, Prince Harry and his bride-to-be announced that they were taking a step back as senior members of the Royal Family so they could raise their son with more privacy. Mary was George V's only child. Her husband was the 6th Earl of Harewood. The princes produced six grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 9 great great grandchildren. The Lascelles family holds the Earldom of Harewood. Two of David Lascelles' children were born before he married his first wife. They were not able to take his title. The only son of Alexander Lascelles, Viscount Lascelles, is not eligible to inherit his family's royal title because his parents were not married when he was born. Prince George, Duke of Kent, and his wife, Princess Marina of Greece, had three children before he died. He has seven grandsons and 16 great grandsons. The Windsors are not allowed to become the Crown because they are both confirmed Roman Catholics. The Dukedom of Kent is still up for grabs.
