Buckingham Palace announced that Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96.

The queen died on Thursday as her family rushed to be with her.

The statement said that the Queen died peacefully. The king and queen will return to london tomorrow.

Charles issued a statement shortly after his mother's death was announced. The death of my beloved mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We are sad about the passing of a beloved mother. I am certain that her loss will be felt by many people around the globe.

The palace said that royal doctors were concerned about her health and put her under medical supervision. The 96-year-old queen pulled out of a virtual Privy Council meeting after her doctors advised her to rest.

The queen swore in Liz Truss as the 15th prime minister of her 70 year reign on Tuesday. The queen moved to her retreat in Aberdeenshire during the summer due to ongoing mobility issues and this was the first time that the handover took place outside Buckingham Palace.

The former Prince of Wales is now king. Prince William will inherit his father's title. One day after the monarch died, Charles won't be officially named.

Two years after he retired from his royal duties, Prince Philip passed away at the age of 99. The oldest male member of the royal family was him. He and Queen Elizabeth had four children.

The queen had a number of health setbacks in the last months of her life. Buckingham Palace said that she had tested positive. For the following week, the monarch was moved to light duties. In the weeks leading up to her Jubilee celebrations in early June, the 96-year-old took part in less public events due to mobility issues and was forced to miss a service celebrating her 70 year reign because of "some discomfort."

The longest reign of any monarch in British history took place when Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne at the age of 25. Her great-grandmother Queen Victoria spent 62 years on the throne.

She became the second-longest serving monarch in world history, after France's King Louis XIV, who ruled for 72 years and 120 days.

Margaret Thatcher, Britain's first female prime minister, was one of 15 prime ministers overseen by Queen Elizabeth II. She was the last surviving head of state to have served in the Second World War, as well as the independence of over 20 nations from the United Kingdom.

During the time of 13 American presidents, the queen met 12 of them. Princess Margaret visited the White House in 1965, but she never met Lyndon Johnson.

King Charles I reigned from 1625 to 1649 and King Charles II reigned from 1660 to 1685. The Prince of Wales can use any other Christian name for his title.
