A California sheriff's deputy surrendered to law enforcement after shooting and killing a married couple in their home while he was off duty.

The Dublin Police Department got a call at about 12:45 a.m. reporting that an armed person had entered a house and shot two people. Two people were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The shooter was identified by witnesses as a deputy with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, and he fled the scene in his vehicle, leading to an hourslong search for the cop. Williams called law enforcement as officials prepared to give an update on the case at a press conference.

The police chief, who spent 45 minutes on the phone with Williams, said they were able to keep him on the phone long enough to get California Highway Patrol units to his location near Coalinga.

"It's a great loss for our community, and it's even more disappointing to know that it was one of our own that actually was the person behind this tragic incident," he said.

The nature of Williams' relationship with the couple is still being investigated by the sheriff's department.

Kelly told reporters that at some point they will land on a motive. This was not a random act of violence.

Kelly explained that the sheriff's department was unaware of any issues with Williams, who joined the county exactly one year ago.

Kelly said that this isn't what they're about. We didn't know that this could happen.

Williams grew up in an affluent home and graduated from college with honors. He was let go from the police department because of issues with his ability and skill set rather than his conduct.

Williams was employed by the police department from January 2020 to January 2021.

He was hired by the Alameda sheriff's office and they did a complete and thorough background check and psychological exam.

His background was perfect according to Kelly.

Significant events must have happened in his life that his supervisors were unaware of. Williams was in crisis when he called officials to surrender.

Williams was assigned to a courthouse in Oakland and occasionally worked at the Santa Rita Jail. He worked his normal shift at the courthouse and then went to the jail to work overtime.

According to Kelly, investigators are trying to figure out what happened after he left the jail and showed up at the house. The victims are believed to have been asleep when Williams arrived. A child and two other family members were in the house.

Kelly said they are looking into all the angles to see if there was a romantic relationship, a business relationship, or some other type of connection to the couple. Williams isn't a relative of the victims who are both Asian.

Kelly said that there was a relationship that was formed recently. I don't know what it was but I think we'll get an answer to that.
