The longest-serving monarch in British history has passed away. The Royal Family said the Queen died peacefully at her estate in Scotland. King Charles is now in control and will return to London tomorrow. The situation was dire when Elizabeth's children were told to hurry to her side. The prince and his bride have been in the UK this week. He went to a place called Balmoral. On Tuesday she met with the new Prime Minister of England. With her Royal duties being scaled back over the past year, and trips she might normally make without a second thought, she was nixed on doctors' orders at the last minute. Her family and the country celebrated the Platinum Jubilee in June, marking 70 years since she ascended to the throne. It's a sad time for the United Kingdom and its Commonwealth realm, as Queen Elizabeth was beloved around the globe. After the death of her father, King George VI,Elizabeth ascended to the throne at a very young age, just 25 years old. Europe was still recovering from World War II and it was difficult to take the reins. There were many conflicts that affected her nation, including the Troubles of Northern Ireland, the UK's withdrawal from the European Union, and the gaining of sovereignty for several nation-states. Elizabeth oversaw the decolonization of Africa and the Caribbean as well as other territories in South Asia that gained independence. Australia's pivot from a parliamentary government to a full-blown republic, the patriation of the Canadian constitution, military coups and conflicts, and the Gulf War are just some of the landmark moments the Queen has weighed in on. Her opinions were influential for a lot of people. As Elizabeth was navigating the choppy waters of royalty, she had her husband, Prince Philip, by her side, as well as her extended Royal family. The Royals were the subject of much speculation, gossip, innuendo and intrigue, but perhaps not as much as when Elizabeth's son, Prince Charles, married Princess Diana. The impact of Diana's death on the Royal family and the Queen is still discussed as it pertains to the larger Royal family. The relationship between her grandson, Harry, and his wife, who accused the Royal family of racism in an interview with Oprah, is similar. Elizabeth seems to have taken the accusations to heart, even though she wasn't directly implicated. The institution of the monarchy itself was seen as a denial of Harry and Meg's claims by the Queen, who appeared to have taken issue with their characterization of the Royal family. The monarchy's traditions were upheld by the Queen and she fulfilled her obligations with grace despite the recent break in her family. Philip died in 2021. Elizabeth continued to meet with heads of state even after she moved to Windsor Castle. The Queen has done her job. Not to mention the many extended Royal family members that run the gamut, Queen Elizabeth is survived by her 4 children, 8 grandchildren and even more great-grandson. She was over the age of 100. I am sad.
