Space photos have a big year. The Inouye Solar Telescope is the world's most powerful solar scope and it shows some incredibly close up shots of our Sun.
The images are amazing, and once again show that the Sun looks nothing like a burning ball of gas. One observer said it looked like shag carpet.
The lines of burning plasma known as "spicules" look like strands of hair or something similar. Spicules are short, bristle-like spurts of material that cover the Sun's face. The pom poms are from "My Neighbor Totoro".
spicules erupt from the Sun's surface at a rate of 60 miles per second and can reach 6,000 miles. Don't let them fool you. You would be killed if you got tangled with one. Scientists think that spicules help the star sustain, balance, and transfer energy through its many regions.
According to a study published in the journal Science, spicules are formed due to the cancellation of the atmosphere's magnetic field.
Sun spots to be, uh, portals to hell, and some blobs of plasma captured in the past look like caramel corn, have been shown in previous close up imagery. Here's to whatever the Inouye Solar Telescope surprises us with next.
Stunning new images show the face of the sun, like we have never seen it before.
