A young woman struggling to hold it together in small-town America finds herself witness to what may or may not be a murder in the first trailer for The Peripheral.
There areSpoilers for the novel
The novel is a bleak, futuristic future world full of big ideas, visionary technology, and its own jargon. The reader is plunged into this setting and needs to get used to it; Gibson doesn't want to show everything to us on a silver platter. As the novel progresses, it becomes an action-packed cyberpunk thriller.
Two plot lines start to converge. Flynne is the young woman who is the focus of the first arcs. Flynne works at the local 3D printing shop in a small town which is the sole source of goods for the population. Burton, Flynne's brother, is a veteran of the US Marine Corps's elite Haptic Recon force and suffers from brain trauma due to his implants.
Burton works for a company that maintains a video game. Flynne witnessed a woman being killed by a swarm of minirobots when she was substituting for Burton. Is it a murder or a game? The boundaries of this novel can get fuzzy.
AdvertisementThe second part of the series takes place in a futuristic and desolate London in the aftermath of an apocalyptic event. The world is ruled by Russians. This world's version of aninfluencer is the corporate PR guy named Wilf Netherton. Wilf was fired for a stunt that went badly.
There is a link between the two timelines and the black market technology known as peripherals. The peripherals link the users to the past, and when they make contact, the past splits into two timelines. Lev introduces Wilf to the tech. Flynne's world is one such example. Since Flynne is the sole witness to Aelita's murder, there are many attempts on her life, as well as a hunt for her missing sister.
The show was developed by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy as part of their overall deal with the streaming platform. They are executive producers along with the creator of the show. The Peripheral is supposed to be a "dazzling, hallucinatory glimpse into the fate of mankind," according to Deadline Hollywood.
AdvertisementJack Reynor and Eli Goree play Burton and the triple amputee comrade-in-arms, respectively. Gary Carr and Charlotte Riley play characters. There is no cast listing for the key player in the novel. The cast includes J.J. Feild as Lev, T'Nia Miller as Cherise, AlexHernandez as Tommy Constantine, AustinRising as Leon, and Chris Coy as Jasper.
Do you think the series will be good? It's hard to tell from this extended tease, which focuses on the basic premise and is set to introduce strange retro electronic music reminiscent of TRON. The visuals are striking and we will be getting a lot of action. There is a glimpse of the novel's tattoos and a car that might be similar to the invisibility suits used by assassins in the novel's future world.
The Peripheral will premiere on Prime Video. The second season is being developed. The question of where the series will go for its second season will be raised by the first season's eight hour long episodes. There is a chance that the author of Agency will publish a sequel and a prequel in 2020. The book is set in an alternate year in which Hillary Clinton was elected US president, and in the 21st century with people engaging in more timelines.
Prime Video has a listing.
