Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso collide

Lewis Hamilton will start the Italian Grand Prix at the back because of a grid penalty.

The seven-time champion has four power units this season, one more than is allowed.

The third engine of Hamilton's car was damaged when he crashed into Fernando Alonso.

The recovery plan for the engine is still being worked on.

Hamilton said that he was doing it. We're hopeful that we can use that again, but I have to recover from my back injury.

The third engine needed repairs after Hamilton's first-lap incident with Alonso with fluids leaking out of the car, before being ordered to stop on track.

Hamilton's record of being the only driver in F1 history to win a grand prix in every season of his career is in serious jeopardy because of the penalty he received.

Hamilton was in the running for a win in the Netherlands last weekend, but a late safety car ruined his chances.

He doesn't care about records. I want to get that win.

Since 2007, we have had the chance to win. We will have a chance this year. It is a big goal to get back to the front by the end of the race.

I don't know where our car will be good. I was surprised when I got into the car.

Eighth title still a target

Hamilton has yet to win a race in the 2022 season but the seven-time world champion was closer than ever to taking the chequered flag at Zandvoort last weekend

Hamilton said he was determined to win an eighth world title, as well as to continue his work promoting diversity in motorsport, and dropped a hint he is likely to continue in F1 after his current Mercedes contract expires at the end of 2020.

He said it was about winning another world title. Winning it is special and unique. You want to try to get to the point where no driver has gone past seven.

The journey is what you bring with you, as you get older. There is a larger picture with the work we're doing. I would be so proud to win the eighth title with this team.

I feel better than I have before, I focus a lot on that. I'm in great shape, I love what I'm doing, and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

I've always wanted to be with Mercedes. We have been partners for a long time. We are embarking on a lot of positives. I would like to be involved in that. I will be with Mercedes for the rest of my life, and I think I can race for a while longer. I might steer towards that.

Verstappen's march set to continue

Red Bull's Max Verstappen is a strong favourite to win the race, but Hamilton's penalty removes a potential front-runner.

The Italian team's season began to fall apart with a series of reliability problems and strategic errors and Charles Leclerc was the main rival to the Dutch driver.

The new livery features flashes of yellow on the car's red paint, reflecting the historic colour of Modena, which is 75 years old this weekend.

He was not hopeful of a good result.

He expects it to be a difficult weekend. Red Bull is expected to be better. Our car is not suited by the track. We have had some good and bad surprises, so let's hope for the best.

The straight-line speed advantage of Red Bull is what Leclerc is worried about.

It is not enough to gain back the advantage on the straights on tracks like this. I believe that will happen this weekend.

Verstappen, who has won 10 of the 15 races this year and is on course to smash the records for wins in a season held by Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel at 13, said that they have never been quick on the straights. Everyone runs low downforce here and you can't hide that anymore.

We have been different this year and I hope we can show that again this weekend.

As the weekend progresses, there will be more engine penalties for other drivers, as well as a five-place grid penalty for Mick Schumacher.
