The new Apple Watch Ultra is aimed at athletes and explorers. The Apple Watch Series 8 is the same as the Apple Watch Ultra, but there is more than meets the eye. Some of the more notable differences are highlighted here.
Even in the worst of climates, the Apple Watch Ultra is not likely to become non-functional. Apple says the watch has been designed to accommodate the most extreme environments, with an on-wrist operating temperature from 4 to 131 F.
The larger Apple Watch Ultra display has a new Wayfinder watch face. There is a compass built into the dial and space for up to eight complications on the screen at the same time. The Wayfinder watch face can be tailored for a variety of expeditions.
The Apple Watch Ultra has a third physical control on the left side of the screen called the Action button, which can serve a variety of functions.
One push from the Action button will let you track race segments during a workout, find a way out when using Backtrack, or start up a dive computer, depending on your needs.
The biggest display yet on an Apple Watch can output contents at up to 2,000 nits and is two times brighter than any other Apple Watch display.
Night Mode will turn the interface red and remove blue light from the display to make it easier to see in the dark.
If you ever become lost, injured, or want to draw attention to your location, Apple Watch Ultra has an 86-decibel siren that can be enabled by holding the action button.
Apple says the siren has a unique sound signature that can be repeated for hours. The sirens can be heard up to 600 feet away, and the first pattern suggests distress.
Both L1 and L5 are integrated into the Apple Watch Ultra. According to Apple, this will help trail runners and other athletes who find themselves in dense trees or high buildings by giving them the most accurateGPS of any watch on the market.
There are three different views of the compass in watchOS 9. There is a new hybrid view that shows both a compass dial and a digital view at the same time, as well as an additional view that includes latitude, longitude, elevation, and incline.
If you want to mark the location you are in, you can use the action button or the compass waypoint icon. The compass waypoint complication updates in real time showing both the direction of the waypoint as well as its approximate distance if you tap the icon.
If you get lost or confused and want to retrace your steps, the Backtrack function can be used.
The Apple Watch Ultra is certified to the international standard for dive accessories. The Depth app on the Apple Watch Ultra can show time, current depth, water temperature, duration under water, and max depth reached.
The Depth app on the Apple Watch Ultra can be opened underwater, making it easy to get important information. The Depth app can be assigned to the action button to be launched.
The Apple Watch Ultra was available for pre-order after Wednesday's event. The Trail, Alpine, and Ocean bands are available with it. The Apple Watch Ultra will be available for purchase on September 23.
